HOW TO APPLY

SILK PLASTER INSTRUCTIONS

The application of SILK PLASTER is very simple. Anyone can handle it with no special training. You won't need any special equipment, just plastic trowel.

To make it properly, first you have to prepare the surface. The wall is heterogeneous in its composition, its surface may have remnants of old wallpaper, glue, old paint, plaster, wood screws and nails, inside - iron fittings. Since Silk Plaster is mixed with water, these remnants can extract in the form of rust and yellow stains on the surface.

Surface should be dry, clean and evenly white, without any stains. Remove old wallpapers, nails and etc. If necessary, cover the places affected with fungus with antiseptic, remove dust and dry up the wall. To prevent rusty stains cover with oil-based paint bolts, screws, nails, tacks and etc. Plane surface with plaster/stucco and prime it in 2-3 layers with the original SILK PLASTER primer, drying time between layers should be 3-4 hours. In the absence of the original SILK PLASTER primer use any waterproof primer or any waterproof mat paint. To choose the best primer option please consult with the seller in your country..

For Victoria 701, Optima 051, Standart 011, Base coating No 1 and Base coating No 2 please use only 'Alkyd oil base primer - sealer' or 'Acrylic eggshell paint'. For better grip add a hand cup of clean sand and stir very good.

Please do not use water based primers for Silk Plaster white bases.

WALL PREPARING FOR SILK PLASTER

Consider the application of Silk Plaster SILK PLASTER on the most common types of surfaces. Preparation of wall is similar as for effect decorative mineral coatings.

Wood surfaces, plywood, MDF

Such materials are often used locally, in places of doorways, arches, entresols and etc. Liquid wallpaper can be applied on the wood surfaces only after you make sure that they will not deform from the moisture, i.e. fixed properly. Moreover, it is worth considering that the thinner the sheet, the most likely its deformation. To protect Silk Plaster from these surfaces before its applying, use Silk Plaster primer in 2-3 layers, followed by mat paint or any waterproof primer which is recommended by the seller. In the absence of the original Silk Plaster primer or waterproof primer then we recommend coating it first with any oil-based paint, white color. Then coat it with usual white mat paint for good adhesion.

Places with protruding metal part

Refers to the details of steel reinforcement / armature, airways and etc. Such places have to be covered pointwise with oil-based paint to prevent rusting.

The walls partially painted with bright colors (light on top and dark on bottom)

This technique had been often used before. It is important to prevent the manifestation of the color change ("waterline") after drying of Silk Plaster. In this case, we recommend plaster/stucco the surface and prime it with the mixture of PVA adhesive and any water resistant mat paint for front walls (masonry paint) in proportion 1:3. Please, apply 2-3 layers of the primer till you get homogeneous white color on the wall.

Concrete, partially putty wall, plastered brick wall

Totally plane surface with plaster/stucco and prime it in 2-3 layers with the original Silk Plaster primer, drying time between layers should be 3-4 hours. Plane the color with white mat paint. In the absence of the original Silk Plaster primer use any waterproof primer or any waterproof mat paint. To choose the best primer option please consult with the seller in your country. If the concrete wall is initially weak, badly peeling, flaking, use of any materials is initially complicated due to the fact that the adhesion is practically absent. Therefore first it is necessary to apply a standard restorative coating which is well represented by various manufacturers in the market of building materials.

Walls in old buildings

Materials used in the construction of old houses, were rather poor quality. Often, it's even uncertain from with materials these walls are composed. Such walls are very insidious because they can cause rust which will lead to yellow spots. To avoid the appearance of rust spots it is important to clean and prepare the surface carefully before proceed with the Silk Plaster application. Plane surface with plaster/stucco and prime it in 2-3 layers with the original Silk Plaster primer, drying time between layers 3-4 hours. Plane the color with white mat paint. In the absence of the original Silk Plaster primer then we recommend coating it first with any oil-based paint, white color. Then coat it with usual white mat paint for good adhesion. It is possible to use other compounds available in the market but before applying liquid wallpaper on the wall it is recommended to test it first on the small surface of the wall.

Surfaces with the gypsum boards

Gypsum boards are currently widely used in the construction of interior partitions. The sheets are fixed with the screws and joints are leveled with plaster mixtures. Plastering places of only sheets joints is the most common mistake in for the liquid wallpaper application. Because it may result to manifestation of the joints places after Silk Plaster applied on the wall, especially if you use light color of Silk Plaster. That is why it is important to putty the whole wall, even though the gypsum boards are very flat, it is important to make sure that joint places are the same white color as the rest of the wall. Then don`t forget to coat the wall with white mat paint. Places where rust may occur (bolts, screws, nails, tacks and etc.) should be covered pointwise with oil-based paint to prevent rusting.

Oriented strand board (OSB)

Oriented strand board (OSB) is a multilayer construction material. The main component is glued and compressed wood. The surface of oriented strand board must be prepared very accurate, before the applying of liquid wallpaper we strongly recommend to sheathe the wall with gypsum boards and then to prepare the surface for gypsum boards. At the market you can find OSB’s that are already sheathed with gypsum boards. If it is not possible, the surface of OSB must be plastered (about the right type of plaster is better to ask a manufacturer of OSB). Than the surface must be primed with the original SILK PLASTER primer or with the primer GF-021 and then covered with white mat paint. After that you can apply liquid wallpaper. Because the composition of OSB can be very different depending on the manufacturer, we recommend you to apply SILK PLASTER at the small area at first and then, if the preparation of the surface was done correct, to continue the application to the rest of the wall.

IMAGE CREATING WITH SILK PLASTER

If you plan to create a picture with SILK PLASTER, first you need to draw the sketch on the wall

  1. Prepare the wall according to the instruction given in wall preparation section
  2. Draw the sketch on the wall using pencil
  3. Apply material as per sketch. It should go beyond the outline of the sketch on 1-2 mm
  4. Using small rubber trowel (width 3-5 cm), push the material inside of the outline of the sketch
  5. Plane the material evenly
  6. Let the applied part of the sketch get totally dry
  7. Apply another color of Silk Plaster in 1-2 mm from the dry part to avoid overcloak of two colors
  8. To make clear contours of the image it is possible to use markers after wall will dry

It is as easy and simple as the child making the picture with Plasticine. Exclusive and unique design made with Silk Plaster will make you and your family happy during long years.

APPLICATION

  1. Pour out room temperature water into the plastic tube. Use 6 liters for 1 pack of  SILK PLASTER “Master”, “Optima”, “Standard”, “Prestige”, “Victoria”, “Air Line”, “West”, “South” and “Ecodecor”; 7 liters for “Relief” and “Premium”; 7,5 liters for “Recoat” and 4,5 liters for “Nord”, “East” and “Provence”. ATTENTION: Not allowed the partial kneading of the pack. For each surface prepared for application, it is recommended to knead the number of packs to cover it entirely from corner to corner from one batch.
  2. Add glitters into the water if necessary. Shake the pack to spread the mixture inside evenly. Whereupon, pour out the mixture into the plastic tube and mix by hands well, straining through the fingers to avoid formation of glue clots.
  3. Leave the kneaded batch for recommended period (12 hours) to get soaked properly before applying. For convenient storage use the packaging bag. Mix batch of a few soaked packs in the plastic tube 15-25 liters volume (3-4 packs at once) and again mix the soaked batch by hands well. Since minor color variations from batch to batch are possible, it is recommended as consumed to add a new batch and mix with the rest. Add up to 1 liter of room temperature water for one bag for easier application.
  4. Taking small portions apply the soaked material with the plastic trowel evenly on the surface with the layer (1-2 mm). Use the same batch to cover surface from one corner to another. Plastic trowel must adjoin to the material at an angle of 10-15 degrees, forming a wedge.

For an ideal application of Silk Plaster in 1-2 hours, using side lighting, smooth out the surface with the plastic trowel, soaking it in water time to time.

The indoor temperature must not fall below +15 ° C, humidity - normal.

Drying time: 24-48 hours depending on indoor temperature and humidity. Ventilation is recommended.

To avoid roughness of the surface and appearing of the base plate, please follow the specified material consumption.
